Physical Prototyping

U.A.V. Workstations: CARDBOARD PROTOTYPING

Prompt:

Design and Prototype Military UAV Operator Workstations.

Tools Used:

Solidworks
Laser Cutter
Sketch / Photoshop

Process:

Workstation development occurred in seven stages.

The development stages included: Static Displays, Dynamic Displays, Designing for Situational Awareness, Multi-Modal Design, Control Systems, Standards Integration, and Workstation Design and Setup.

Presentations and critiques (from Military Pilots, UX Designers/Researchers, and an Engineering Psychologist) occurred at each stage of the process.

VR Controller: HAND MODELED PROTOTYPING

Complete Set Wide.png

Prompt:

Iterate a design of a handheld object.
Create a digital CAD file of the final iteration.

Tools Used:

Pink Foam Modeling
Solidworks

Problem:

VR Controllers currently either offer limited interaction, but fit easily in a pocket or bag (Samsung), or offer more diverse interactions, but are larger and more easily broken due to their shape (ex. Oculus).

Solution:

Create a robust controller for the advancing VR market that offers that offers a larger base of interactions while remaining easily portable and sturdy.

Process:

Iteration occurred over 15 models, with user testing occurring in between each iteration.

  • Improved thumb indentation to improve grip and denote thumb-pad placement.

    • Allowing for users to pickup in the correct orientation while in VR.

  • Buttons began vertical, then staggered. Finally the buttons reduced by one and increased in size.

    • Adjustments increased the range of hand-size that reported high levels of comfort during use.

  • Front curvature was adjusted to a set angle and corners were increased in diameter

    • The angle and curves allowed for a hand position that more comfortably filled the palm. This caused the user’s grip to be more relaxed/comfortable while keeping full control of the controller.

  • A thumb hook was added near the thumb-pad and adjusted in size/shape.

    • The hook protrusion catches on the user’s thenar webspace, keeping the controller in place , increasing control and reducing slipping.
